Choosing board games for a small screen

Player count and playing time do not tell you how a game feels on a phone. Look at what you must read, select and compare during a normal turn.

Azul
Wingspan
Ark Nova

Three things to check

Can you read card text without losing your place? Can you select a piece without opening the wrong tooltip? Can you see the shared area and player information? Try a tutorial or practice table before committing to a fast match.

Different games, different layouts

Azul asks you to compare factory tiles with your pattern lines. Wingspan asks you to read bird cards and follow habitat effects. Ark Nova spreads decisions across a zoo map, action cards and a shared market. Each creates a different small-screen challenge.

Choose a view for the task

Use portrait for a compact area and landscape when you need more width. Zoom out to compare the board, then zoom in for details. A tablet may be more comfortable for a first play of a text-heavy game. Familiarity also makes a difference.
